What to expect, from the first call onward

No mystery and no pressure. Here is exactly how the process unfolds.

01

First, we connect

You reach out by phone or through the form on this site. We then speak briefly, usually for ten to fifteen minutes, so you can describe what is going on and ask whatever you would like about how the work is done.

This conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. If a different clinician would serve you better, Dr. Thornton will say so and help point you toward the right person.

02

Next, we meet

The first one or two sessions are for understanding: your history, your current life, what you have already tried, and what you hope will be different six months from now.

By the end of this stage you will have a clear sense of how Dr. Thornton understands your situation and a shared plan for what the work will focus on.

03

Working together

Most people meet weekly at a consistent time, which builds the continuity that real change requires. Some come for a focused period of a few months; others stay considerably longer.

Progress is reviewed openly and regularly. If something is not working, we say so and change it. The direction of the therapy always belongs to you.

04

Payment

Fees are discussed clearly during our first conversation so there are never surprises. Payment is due at the time of each session.

The practice is out-of-network with insurance panels. A detailed monthly statement can be provided so you may submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Twenty-four hours notice is asked for cancellations.

Questions

What people usually ask before they begin

If your question is not answered here, call the office at (626) 354 6068 and we can talk it through.

We spend the first meeting getting oriented. You describe what brought you in, I ask about your history and current life, and we talk about what you would like to be different. There is nothing to prepare.

Take the first step

A confidential conversation is where the work begins.

Reaching out can feel like the hardest part. Send a note or call the office and we will find a time to talk about what brings you here.

Appointment request

Request a time to talk

Share a few details and Dr. Thornton will respond personally, usually within one business day, to arrange a brief introductory phone call.

Your message is treated with the same discretion as everything else in this practice. Please avoid sending sensitive clinical details through the form.
